Spirit Week

We have Spirit Week about three times a year and I am one of a few teachers who dress up every time.  I love Spirit Week because it’s a perfect opportunity for me to step out of my element and do something different.  To be a bit silly and goofy.  To mix it up and have a little fun — especially when things are looking rather discouraging for next year.  To get kids talking, giggling and laughing. To be a kid again (because y’all know that I’m really a kid at heart).

Monday : Environmental Awareness Day : OK, so this isn’t the most exciting outfit but it worked.  The hat was the big hit — I get mixed responses each time I wear it.  One person looked at my hat and paused for a few moments before he said, “Oh, I get it.  You’re from Cats, the play.  It also reminds me of Mongolia.”  I’ve been told that this hat looks like a couch pillow but never a cat from Mongolia.  Interesting.

100304SpiritWeek04

This outfit is a result of a dream.  Last Friday night, I had a dream that the girls on the NASA team would dress up as Uhura from Star Trek and the boys would be Spock.  I woke early Saturday, texted the ladies and by 9 am, I was out shopping for materials for our costumes.  This video from Instructables served as the inspiration.

The plan: Julie would cut the necklines of the shirts and replace it with a black neckline.  I would take in the sides of the x-large t-shirts and glue the gold insignia and bands around the arms.  Being the great seamstress and quilter that she is, Julie insisted on sewing the costumes …. so she ended up making them all.  Thanks, Julie, for making this dream a reality!  You are awesome!

So today, Thursday, the five of us (Lisa, Julie, Dave, Jim and I) came to school wearing Star Trek costumes.  Some thought we were Alvin from the Chipmunks.  Some looked at us and said “What the heck are you wearing?  Is that something you picked up from the Thrift shop?”  Others thought we were The Incredibles.  A few knew who we were and slyly slipped the Vulcan symbol.  Pretty sweet ending to a crazy week.

The “Star Trek” team is the coolest thing ever.

Ever.

Oh my gosh! Great Trek costumes! I should do that for next halloween. Highschool spirit weeks were always stressful for me (Halloween still is). Can’t ever think of something creative to put together to wear!
Love your blog!
